Red 96.7FM family celebrate Devon Matthews’ birthday on air

Trinidad and Tobago was thrown into shock and grief in the early hours of the morning last July upon hearing the news that singer and radio personality Devon Matthews had died.  Matthews, who placed third in the International Soca Monarch with Ella Andell earlier that year, collapsed backstage at TRIBE band launch. He later died of heart failure at St. Clair Medical.

Today, Matthews would have been 37 years old.

One year later, his radio family is showing the world that he’ll never be forgotten. The Red 96.7FM team hosted an on-air birthday remembrance for Devon, hosted by JJ and Shot Master J. Listeners were invited to call in with the access phrase–and Devon’s signature phrase–No Kill Joy and sent their birthday tributes.

The tribute also included a number of Michael Jackson, who was widely known to be his favourite artist.

His mother, Gloria, even called in during the segment, thanking the team for the tribute. She appeared to be in good spirits, although she admitted that some days were hard.

“I feel so proud,” she said. “Some days I’m sad, some days I’m happy. It’s a mixed feeling but I’m trying my best. When I pass by Devon’s room, I still shout him out. I put so [many] pictures all over, he’s always around. I don’t think of him he as he passed away he’s always here.”
