Imagine that you’re a young, up-and-coming artist, just out here trying to put out your music and make a name for yourself. Next thing you know, you’re in the studio putting down vocals for a track featuring one of the biggest dancehall artists in the world.
That was pretty much the case for Xone. Fresh off of a successful first Carnival season this year, he went back into the studio on his birthday to lay down some vocals for a new track. Unbeknownst to him, his producer Anson Pro (‘Workout’, Kes and Nailah Blackman, ‘Memory’, Machel Montano and Tarrus Riley, ‘Bring The Beat’, Machel Montano and Tessanne Chin) was putting together a collaboration for him and dancehall hit-maker Vybz Kartel. Pro had gotten Kartel’s recording from producer ZJ Sparks out of Jamaica two years ago and, after Xone’s vocals were added, ‘Vices’ was created.
The track was so well received one of the writers for WizKid sent additional lyrics for the song. As far as ultimate birthday presents go, getting a song with Vybz Kartel is pretty much up there.
